Maintenance of processes of resorption in the eyes, in particular in the presence of inflammatory exudates, bleeding and clouding of the vitreous body of various etiologies (age, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus), with myopic and atherosclerotic changes of the vessels of the retina and vasculature of the eyeball, degenerative processes of the retina, cataracts on the initial stage, optic nerve atrophy (as a result of syphilis), and also as an auxiliary therapeutic agent for the treatment of fungal conjunctivitis and keratitis..

Composition of the substance

active substance: potassium iodide; 1 ml of solution contains potassium iodide 20 mg;

excipients: sodium chloride, sodium thiosulfate, disodium edetate, chlorhexidine diacetate, sodium hydroxide, water for injection.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics.

Potassium iodide 2% is an ophthalmic, anti-sclerotic and resorptive drug. The active substance of iodine droplets is iodine contained in microdoses. Due to this, the drug activates metabolic processes and affects the metabolism of proteins and lipids, resulting in increased levels of lipoproteins in the blood and fibrinolytic activity. Ions of iodine increase the dispersion of colloids, which leads to a decrease in blood viscosity. Reduced dispersion of colloids correlates with signs of aging and atherosclerosis. These results, in combination with the rich experience of iodine use in medical practice, show that iodine salts inhibit the development of atherosclerotic processes or reduce their intensity. The influence of iodine ions on colloids is associated with the expansion of blood vessels, which leads to increased tissue perfusion.

The use of eye drops containing iodine is the only method of treatment where there is no direct effect on the site of the disease or when the affected area is unattainable. Iodine compounds have a direct effect on the resorption process, in particular in newly discovered cases of the disease. In case of senile cataract, which has already developed, it is unlikely to stop this process, but its development (cataract growth, visual acuity reduction) can be slowed down by the use of iodides.

Pharmacokinetics.

After administration to the conjunctival sac, iodides penetrate into the structures of the eye, but there is no detailed information on the distribution of iodides in the structures of the eye. When injected into the conjunctival sac, some of the iodides are absorbed into the systemic circulation. They enter the nose through the nasolabial canal and are absorbed into the systemic circulation through the nasal mucosa.

Iodine is very slowly excreted from the body. Potassium iodide (inorganic ionic compound) is not metabolized. The corresponding ions (K +, I-) are derived from the kidneys.
